International Certified Addiction Professional in Treatment (ICAP-Treatment)
ICAP-Treatment I
One (1) year of full time (at least 1500 hours) supervised working experience in a substance use disorder (SUD) related field and passage of the first public examination, High School/Secondary diploma, or equivalency.
Written description of competency in counselling skills and functions as verified by supervisor(s) or other health care professional(s) who have personally observed the candidate’s SUD-related counselling work.
120 contact hours of education and/or training in SUD-related subjects including at least 6 contact hours of HIV/AIDS and 6 contact hours of ethics training.
Signed agreement to adhere to the GCCC Code of Ethics for treatment.
Completed application for the ICAP I.
Payment of non-refundable application fee.
Passage of the ICAP-Treatment I exam.
ICAP-Treatment II
Two (2) years of full time (at least 3000 hours) supervised working experience in a substance use disorder (SUD) related field and passage of the first public examination, High School/Secondary diploma, or equivalency.
Successful completion of ICAP I and practicing as an addiction professional for at least 2 years following ICAP I credential OR a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field (Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Public Health, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Nursing, or Behavioural Science)
Written description of competency in counselling skills and functions as verified by supervisors or other health care professionals who have personally observed the candidate’s SUD-related counselling work.
240 contact hours of education and/or training in SUD-related subjects including at least 6 contact hours of HIV/AIDS and 6 contact hours of ethics training.
Signed agreement to adhere to the GCCC Code of Ethics for treatment.
Completed application for the ICAP II.

ICAP-Treatment III
Five (5) years of full time (at least 7500 hours) supervised working experience in a substance use disorder (SUD) related field AND a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field (Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Public Health, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Nursing, or Behavioural Science)
Current ICAP-Treatment II or credential/certification/license as an SUD/addiction professional issued by a national entity or other credentialing authority. OR a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field (Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Public Health, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Nursing, or Behavioural Science)

500 contact hours of education and/or training in SUD-related subjects including at least 6 contact hours of HIV/AIDS and 6 contact hours of ethics training.

ICAP-Treatment IV
Five (5) years of full time (at least 7500 hours) of supervised working experience in a substance use disorder (SUD) related field AND a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field (Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Public Health, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Nursing, or Behavioural Science)
Current ICAP-Treatment II or III or credential/certification/license as an SUD/addiction professional issued by a national entity or other credentialing authority OR a PhD degree or higher in a relevant field (Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Public Health, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Nursing, or Behavioural Science)
Written description of competency in counselling skills and functions as verified by supervisors or other health care professionals who have personally observed the candidate’s SUD-related counselling work.
500 contact hours of education and/or training in SUD-related subjects including at least 6 contact hours of HIV/AIDS and 6 contact hours of ethics training.

International Certified Addiction Professional in Prevention (ICAP-Prevention)
ICAP-Prevention I
Two years full-time or 3,000 hours of working experience in prevention of substance use and a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Nursing, Teaching, or Behavioural Science) OR four years full-time or 6,000 hours working experience in prevention of substance use and a High School diploma.
Written verification of competency in required prevention skills and functions as certified by a supervisor who has personally observed the candidate’s substance use-related prevention activities OR a work contract indicating prevention activities as part of the deliverables. Application narrative must include specific prevention activities.
A minimum of 120 documented hours of prevention education and/or training. Included in this total must be at least 6 contact hours of physiology and pharmacology related to substance use and 6 contact hours of ethics training.
Submission of a signed and dated statement that the candidate has read and agreed to adhere to the GCCC Code of Ethics for prevention professionals.
Submission of a completed application.

Passage of the ICAP-Prevention I exam.
International Certified Addiction Professional in Recovery Support (ICAP-Recovery Support)
One (1) year full-time (at least 1,500 hours) of supervised working experience in the recovery support related field and passage of the first public examination, High School/Secondary diploma, or equivalency.
A written verification of at least one year of supervised experience in the recovery support related field, as certified by a supervisor who has personally observed the candidate’s work. Application narrative must include specific recovery support activities.
100 contact hours of education and/or training in SUD-Recovery Support included in this at least 6 contact hours of HIV/ AIDS and 6 contact hours of ethics training.
Signed agreement to adhere to the GCCC Code of Ethics for recovery support.
Completed application for the ICAP-Recovery Support.
