Traumatic childhood and life events shape the way an individual sees themselves and the world. These experiences have a significant impact on relationships, self-perception, coping skills, self-esteem, and more. Unfortunately, a common and initially effective way of managing the impact of trauma is through compulsive behaviors. These behaviors provide temporary relief and anesthetize emotional and relational pain. The focus of this presentation is to provide an understanding of the relationship between addiction and trauma and the application of this knowledge through the framework of a compassionate, relational approach to support healing.
