Often, mood and anxiety disorders are comorbid in individuals who have substance use disorders (SUDs). However, individuals may experience both anxiety and manic/depressive symptoms when using certain substances, and may experience similar symptoms during withdrawal. The DSM-5 breaks anxiety into three different types and is described as one of the most prevalent mental health issues in those with SUDs. Mood disorders may also lead to self-medicating with illicit substances. This webinar will discuss the etiology of anxiety and mood disorders and how each may contribute to the development of co-occurring disorders. The webinar will also discuss the neurotransmitters affected by these disorders, as well as effective treatment approaches for these co-occurring disorders.
