A growing body of evidence has found that intimate partner violence (IPV) often targets a partner’s substance use in deliberate attempts to undermine and control survivors and keep them from achieving their recovery goals - a pattern of abuse now known as substance use coercion. This coffee break session will offer an overview of substance use coercion and how practitioners can help, followed by an interactive discussion of barriers, strategies, and resources addressing the intersection of IPV and substance use. Learning Objectives As a result of participating in this session, attendees will be able to: 1. Describe the pattern of intimate partner violence known as substance use coercion 2. Use and/or facilitate the use of the Substance Use Coercion Palm Card in clinical and academic settings 3. Use the provided resource list to locate additional resources to learn more about and address substance use coercion.
