Watch the recording for the Global Launch of the Universal Nurses Addiction Curriculum (UNAC) — a pioneering, internationally-informed educational course created by nurses, for nurses, to address one of the most urgent and escalating health challenges of our time: problematic substance use and substance use disorders.
This groundbreaking curriculum has been made possible thanks to the generous support and funding from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme (DAP). Their unwavering commitment to global drug demand reduction and investment in nursing education has enabled this course to be developed by nurses, for nurses — and for the benefit of communities worldwide.
Across the globe, communities are being deeply impacted by the rising tide of alcohol and drug-related harm. From mental health concerns and family breakdowns to preventable deaths and overwhelmed healthcare systems, the need for knowledgeable, compassionate, and confident nurses in this space has never been more critical.Â
Nurses are the largest part of the global health workforce and often the first — and sometimes only — point of contact for individuals and families affected by substance use. Yet, many have had limited training in this area. UNAC is here to change that.
Developed by internationally respected addiction nursing experts, Professor Carmel Clancy (UK) and Dr. Charon Burda (USA), and supported by a global advisory board and pilot-tested by nurses across continents, the UNAC provides a culturally responsive, evidence-based framework for education in addiction-related care.
It is designed specifically for generalist nurses — those working outside the specialty field of substance use treatment — including undergraduate students, faculty members, new graduates, and frontline practitioners alike.
Whether you're a Faculty of Nursing looking to integrate cutting-edge, globally relevant content into your programs, or a clinical leader striving to upskill your workforce — this course is your opportunity to lead change from the front lines. Equip the next generation of nurses with the knowledge and confidence they need to tackle one of the 21st century’s greatest public health issues.
