Training For Trainers in Addressing Psychological Trauma in Combat Veterans POWS in Ukraine

A training for trainers on overcoming traumatic experiences in combatants and prisoners of war for the deployment of peer-to-peer cascading training was held on November 6-10, in Prague, Czech Republic. The training took place within the framework of the All-Ukrainian mental health program, which is being implemented at the initiative of First Lady Olena Zelenska.

The project is implemented in partnership with the University of California at San Diego (USA), the Institute of Psychiatry of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Ukraine), the International Center for Technology Transfer in Ukraine (ITTC Ukraine), Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic), in cooperation with the Coordination Center for Mental Health of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, NGO "Barrier-free" and with the support of the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR), the international organization "Plan Colombo" and the Bureau of International Drug Trafficking and Law Enforcement Affairs of the US Department of State.

The participants of the training were 20 trainers from Ukraine, who themselves have combat experience and after the training (the first step of this project) will scale the knowledge gained in a peer-to-peer format. These are representatives of various departments, the non-governmental sector, the field of mental health, in particular, military psychologists working in hospitals, including with prisoners of war, psychologists of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Guard, the State Emergency Service, rehabilitation centers and representatives of departments of relevant ministries.

The course program was created and adapted to the needs and unique experience of Ukraine, including socio-cultural characteristics, by representatives of the International Center for Technology Transfer in Ukraine (ITTC Ukraine) together with colleagues from the University of California, San Diego, who specialize in working with people with combat experience.

This page contains methodological material that has become basic in the preparation of the course program and will be used in the monthly supervisory support of Ukrainian trainers during 2024, namely: strategies for responding to stress and distress in the conflict zone; PTSD and related conditions, screening and assessment tools; consequences of traumatic brain injury, post-commutation syndrome (contusion), cognitive and compensatory strategies; cognitive-behavioral intervention strategies; self-help, vicarious trauma (secondary traumatic stress), etc.

The material is intended for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, as well as for everyone who is interested in the mental health problems of military personnel.
